NEST NC1 Project

The NEST NC1 project will provide an effective and efficient sanitary service system for developing areas in North Edmonton. The construction of NEST is planned to happen in stages, which will provide interim servicing that allows development to continue. It was determined that storage would be required to convey peak flows in accordance with the City of Edmonton Standards and to prevent surcharging and sewer backup.

Focus was hired to create the preliminary and detail design for the storage/trunk sewer and associated pumping station, as well as the general engineering and commissioning during construction. The NC1 stage consists of over 1600 m of large diameter sewer, constructed by a tunnel boring machine, under an existing roadway in a well established neighborhood. The tunnel is capable of storing over 11 million litres of sewage during wet weather events, allowing development of approximately 6,900 residential lots to the year 2030.

Focus provided project management and the lead project engineers for the tunnel and pump station design. This assignment involved project planning, concept review, report preparation, overall layout, client liaison, stakeholder communication, budget and schedule tracking, cost estimating, specification preparation and coordination of all sub-consultants.
