Belgravia Storm Tunnel

Focus was commissioned by the City of Edmonton’s Drainage Design and Construction department to undertake preliminary and detail design for the Belgravia Storm Tunnel project. This project was deemed vital to the city because severe rainfall events had caused extreme flooding throughout the neighbourhoods of McKernan and Parkallen in Edmonton. The solution: a new relief storm sewer to service these neighbourhoods.

Focus reviewed and analyzed routing alternatives and site locations, developed the project parameters, coordinated the environmental approval components, designed and reviewed system hydraulics relating to flow and including sewer drop structures over 38m deep and coordinated outfall structure design. Focus also coordinated risk assessment, constructability and value engineering processes to help determine the best solution.

The project was constructed beneath the existing, fully developed Belgravia neighbourhood. The new storm sewer provides an unrestricted outlet for the local storm sewers which benefits the community and the new south LRT tracks.
