Kicking Horse Canyon Highway Improvement

Focus acts as Owner’s Engineer for the Kicking Horse Canyon Highway Improvement Project. This project, which is estimated at over $958 million, involves upgrading approximately 26km of the Trans‐Canada Highway from Golden to the western boundary of Yoho National Park. The corridor, which traverses extremely challenging mountainous terrain, had not had major upgrading since it was built in the 1950s. The original passage was a narrow winding two‐lane section of highway with steep rock faces on one side and a drop‐off to the Kicking Horse River on the other.

From an engineering perspective, this project posed significant construction, maintenance and operational challenges. The improved highway has been designed to a modern four lane standard and includes large bridge replacements and tunnels.
