Harmattan Waste Heat Recovery Project

DPH Focus was contracted by Taylor Gas Liquids Ltd., on behalf of Harmattan Gas Liquids L.P., to proceed with the engineering and procurement for a centrifugal sales gas compressor driven by a gas turbine, complete with waste heat recovery, at the Harmattan Gas Plant. The design, procurement and drawing reviews for the Centaur 50 LS gas turbine directly driving a Solar C-406 compressor had been completed by Starco Engineering, in co-operation with Taylor Gas Liquids Ltd.

The gas turbine driven compressor addition project consisted of the following:

  • Decommissioning/removal of the existing gas engine-driven reciprocating compressors K-104 and K-105
  • Inspection of the existing concrete mats and repair of the K-105 foundation.
  • Installation of a 5000 hp turbine-driven centrifugal compressor unit.
  • The installation of the waste heat recovery unit on the turbine exhaust, using hot oil medium for heat exchange
  • Hot oil system modifications to include for the addition of the waste heat recovery unit.

The project involved the installation of a new 5000 hp centrifugal sales gas compressor driven by a gas turbine to replace part of the existing sales gas compression. Existing compressors K-104/105 were removed and the new unit was installed in their place. The remaining sales gas compressors stayed in place and were used for incremental sales gas requirements or during outages of the new 5000 hp unit.

A waste heat recovery unit was installed to recover some of the waste heat from the gas turbine exhaust: this  would reduce the hot oil heater load and, therefore, the demand for fuel gas at the plant. Waste heat from the exhaust is recovered from the gas turbine exhaust gases using the existing hot oil closed loop circulating system of heat transfer fluid (Petrotherm) to recover the heat and then transfer it back to the plant process.

The project scope considered only the current operation of the Harmattan Gas Plant as the design case for project.
