Youville Home, Covenant Health

Focus’ Landscape Architecture team worked with Covenant Health to create a sustainable and wheelchair accessible landscape at Youville Home.

This not-for-profit long term care facility, which is located across from Father Lacombe Chapel Provincial Historic Site in St. Albert, Alberta, houses over 200 elderly men and women ranging from 70 to 90 years in age. With the recent opening of its Continuing Care Centre and renovations underway to the original facility, Youville Home’s landscaping was looking tired and its existing overland drainage system was no longer appropriate. It was time to enhance the outdoor spaces for residents and their families.

Focus created a sustainable design that evokes interest and memory, provides sensory stimuli and accommodates residents’ special needs. Water conservation, water filtration, and native plant use were integrated throughout the new landscape. It also incorporates healing garden practices, such as aromatic ground covers, traditional and easily recognizable plants like peonies, as well as quiet spaces for meditation or reflection. The wheelchair accessible grounds include an array of native grasses and an abundance of flowering plant material for the residents’ enjoyment.
