Telkwa Official Community Plan

Focus Corporation worked alongside the Village of Telkwa to create the necessary tools and fundamental framework needed to address and manage both current and anticipated pressures, while providing strategies for a resilient community. This positive and progressive village of 1,500 is located on the Yellowhead Highway in northern BC, halfway between Prince Rupert and Prince George.

To involve local citizens and collect the necessary information and community feedback, we created a customized project outreach and communication strategy and led a series of community based “asset mapping” sessions.

Using triple bottom line methodology, we produced a unique Integrated Community Sustainability Plan strategy, Official Community Plan, Zoning Bylaw and an affordable housing needs assessment and action plan. All of our plans emphasized partnerships and various methods of capacity-building.

To support the plans, we created policies that encourage an integrated approach to sustainability and include sustainability strategies, food security initiatives, energy options and environmental protection. We also created actions for implementation that encompass the legislative requirement for assessing greenhouse gas reduction targets and the benchmarks/indicators of success.

Focus used a host of municipal tools and policies to create a “made-in-Telkwa” solution to guide and transform the plan to promote a complete and sustainable community.
