Cortes Island Official Community Plan Review

Focus Corporation provided planning services to the Strathcona Regional District and undertook the completion of the Cortes Island Official Community Plan. This 13,000 hectare island in the Salish Sea has a population of 950 people.

The Focus team identified and addressed key economic, social, cultural and environmental issues found within the island community and developed a plan to support a strong sustainable community.

An extensive grass roots campaign and comprehensive community involvement process engaged multiple sectors of the Cortes community. We discussed the issues with citizens at self-organized community-based events and collaborated with community-based groups, including the Cortes Community Housing Initiative and the Cortes Climate Action Team.

The resulting Cortes OCP Workbook promotes quality of life, future growth, community development, economic, environmental and social well being and the provision of amenities and services. It incorporates issues related to forestry, transportation, affordable housing and aquaculture and indentifies sustainability principles relevant to Cortes, including carbon reduction and energy initiatives.
