Long Lake Oil Sands Project
Nexen Canada Ltd. contracted Focus to provide surveying services to its Long Lake Oil Sands Project. Focus began by providing surveying and plans to facilitate the company’s oil sands exploration. When the site was developed, we provided land surveying services, mapping and plans for pipelines, wells and surface land requirements, construction surveying and quality assurance surveys for the construction of the plant and upgrader sites.
Focus worked for Nexen Canada Ltd. and its partner Opti Canada Inc., and as a sub-contractor to the EPCM contractor and other sub-contractors on the site. Each of our Long Lake clients benefitted from efficiencies in scheduling surveying services, contractor communications, travel costs and administrative tasks, and from overall data consistencies.
Focus developed for Nexen Canada a proprietary system for ground disturbance permitting. The system generated a database of the site’s as-built data and set the parameters for safe work procedures related to any ground disturbance. Focus manages the data in this system, which could be viewed by client-authorized viewers.
Over a number of years, Focus provided many different surveying disciplines to assist in the construction of this multi-billion dollar project’s 70,000 bpd oil facility. Because Focus provides comprehensive and dependable survey services, the client, onsite construction companies and numerous sub-contractors were able to simplify the entire on-site surveying requirements.
To date, Focus has delivered detailed compile mapping and a range of land surveying services, including surveys of core holes, well sites, commercial pad sites, construction layout, pipelines and roads. Now, Focus provides services to Nexen on an as-needed basis for various phases of the project.
