Aboriginal Language Mapping

Aboriginal Language Mapping

Focus provided graphic design, database design, analysis and mapping support to support Heritage Canada’s Aboriginal Affairs Branch in their continuing study of Aboriginal Languages in Canada.

This project involved researching various sources of Aboriginal language‐related data from the 1996 and 2001 Census, the 2001 Aboriginal People’s Survey, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, Heritage Canada and Aboriginal communities and compiling the pertinent facts into one extensive database of information about Canada’s cities and Aboriginal communities.

We used database queries and analysis to calculate specific language indices and generate various maps and graphics that help identify trends. We created an interactive Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) map that allows users to dynamically explore specific Aboriginal languages across Canada and query statistical information for each city and community.

Heritage Canada examines many different issues related to Aboriginal languages, including language diversity, distribution, continuity, revitalization, intergenerational transmission and classification. To illustrate many of these issues, we created large poster displays, PowerPoint slide presentations and a web site information tool.
