Caribou Protection Plans

Caribou Protection Plans

Woodland caribou, which are found in northern and northeastern Alberta, are designated as “threatened” on Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA) and Alberta’sWildlife Act. Focus’ Environment and Geosciences team works with clients to meet government requirements around the protection of woodland caribou.

The submission of a Caribou Protection Plan (CPP) is a pre-requisite for operations within identified caribou ranges. It provides required details of the proposed work, including the proposed schedule and location.

Focus was retained by an oil sands company to develop CPPs for two prospect areas in the 2009/10 operating season. Focus designed the CPPs to guide or restrict activities in the operating areas in order to minimize the level of disturbance to woodland caribou, other wildlife and habitats. Focus provided mitigation measures to be implemented by the oil sand company employees and subcontractors during all activities taking place in the operating areas.
