Pipestone Creek Bonebed Project

Pipestone Creek Bonebed Project

Focus team members worked as a multi-discipline team to provide municipal, bridge, geomatics and environment services. The team recently completed topographic survey, modeling and project management for feasibility, design and construction of an environmentally sensitive access road, a 100T bridge and a pedestrian bridge crossing of Pipestone Creek.

In April 2011, a ribbon-cutting by Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Honourable Donald S. Ethell and a celebration dinner commemorated this momentous new access to a palaentologial treasure trove.

The Pipestone Creek Bonebed Project is located in the Pipestone Creek Valley, near the confluence with the Wapiti River and at the actual site of a dinosaur bonebed the size of several football fields. The Focus-designed road and bridges allow access to this bonebed that dates back 72-73 million years.

It is one of five most significant dinosaur bonebeds ever discovered. The site at Pipestone Creek has already yielded more than 3500 bones including the bones of 40 different animals. The bonebed contains more than 200 bones per cubic meter. A tremendous find compared with other significant discoveries of 20-60 bones per sq meter.

99% of the bones found at the Pipestone Creek Bonebed Project site are from a unique species of Pachyrhinosaurus named Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai in honour of the Grade 8 science teacher, Al Lukusta who unearthed it.

The next Phase of the Pipestone Creek Bonebed Project is to build a world-class museum: The River of Death and Discovery Museum. Once funding is in place, Focus will be servicing the planned museum to be located on a 10-acre site in the Town of Wembley, about 15 miles east of the bonebed, on Hwy 43. Focus will provide sanitary water, storm underground, construction survey and roads design services.

On July 23, 2011, Dan Aykroyd and family, international ambassadors for the Pipestone Creek Dinosaur Initiative, will be hosting the inaugural Aykroyd Family & Friends Dinosaur Ball - a star-studded evening of world-class music, silent auction, fine wine and exceptional dining.

Invitations have been extended, by the Aykroyd Family, to Bobby Kennedy, Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels, The Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper, the co-founder of Microsoft Paul Allen, Catherine Zeta-Jones and many others….
