Groat Ravine Storm Sewer Project

Groat Ravine Storm Sewer Project

Focus was commissioned to help the City of Edmonton’s Drainage Services Department rehabilitate a 50 year old large diameter storm sewer under Groat Ravine.

The existing 2489 mm diameter sewer was originally lined with corrugated metal pipe that had deteriorated to the point that new pipe was needed to ensure continued safe effective service.

Focus, which specializes in trenchless infrastructure upgrading, analyzed numerous possible methods of relining the active sewer before choosing the best option. Factors such as cost, constraints, environmental implications, social/public impacts and functionality were all assessed and considered. Once the optimal method was identified, we used our 3D laser scanner inside of the tunnel to generate a 3D model that determined the minimum diameters and facilitated the design of the new liner.

In the end, a new concrete liner was cast in place using the City’s own manpower and tunneling expertise.
