DC-3 Airplane, Aero Space Museum of Calgary
At the Aero Space Museum of Calgary, Focus’ laser scanning team put its new FARO Laser Scanner Focus 3D equipment through its paces on some large, challenging and unusual targets, including a famous aircraft. The incredible images they produced piqued the interest of the museum staff, who are always seeking exciting ways to make history come alive for new generations, and led to a new exciting opportunity.
The museum’s director suggested that Focus scan another iconic aircraft: a Douglas DC-3 airplane, circa 1950. The DC-3’s sheer size, multi-planed shape and variety of surfaces, including polished chrome, matt painted surfaces, black rubber, cloth and plastic, provided an ideal opportunity for Focus’ technicians to practice with the scanner, perfecting the techniques and strategies they will use with the new equipment in the field.
Focus staff enjoyed becoming expert operators of new cutting edge laser scanning equipment and software in an environment that includes fascinating targets and, unlike most of their job sites, is warm and free from the distractions of the field. The museum benefitted from Focus’ laser scanning professionals’ time and talents, as well as the fascinating end products. Focus contributed the final DC-3 scan data, including photographs and animated movies and fly-throughs, to the museum, where the detailed and interactive information will be an exciting and informative addition to the DC-3 aircraft exhibit, which features one of the many original and full-size replica aircraft on display at the museum.
