Why did you decide to join Focus?
Focus had always maintained a significant presence at the University of New Brunswick, and as a result, many of my fellow graduates worked for Focus. I knew that Focus was one of the significant players in the market, and that they had treated my friends well throughout university by providing them with work experience and financial support.

My initial exposure to the company during the interview process was very positive and having the opportunity to work in such a beautiful part of the country while articling to become a land surveyor was appealing.

I was encouraged by the numerous job opportunities in BC and Alberta, so I decided to go on an adventure and moved west after graduation.

What is your advice to other’s starting a career in Geomatics?
My advice to others starting a career as a professional land surveyor is to go in with a positive attitude, willingness to learn and flexibility. Opportunities await the enthusiastic employees with the attitude of "anytime, anywhere." Short term sacrifices will always lead to long term gain.

What is unique about your office environment/working in Victoria, BC?
One of the unique things about this Focus office is its longevity. Through our prior integration with Hughes & Taylor, we are one of the oldest continuously operating survey firms on Vancouver Island – in business since 1917!

What are the biggest benefits of working at Focus?
Although Focus may be considered a large company, its geographic locations often give it a small office feel. Like here in Victoria, where there is a feeling of camaraderie and working together for the same goals. Yet, we are able to enjoy some of the advantages that larger firms can offer, such as a diversity of work, quality work spaces, superior technological resources, and the like.
