Northwestern Alberta’s town of Peace River is located along the banks of the Peace River, 486 km northwest of Edmonton and 200km north of Grand Prairie. Its population of about 6,240, serves a trading area of over 15,000 people.

While Peace River is a ‘government town,’ with the Government of Alberta being its largest employer, resource extraction industries like forestry and agriculture also contribute to the local economy. Peace River’s proximity to the Peace River Oil Sands, Alberta’s largest oil sands deposit, also has a large impact on the local economy. The oil and gas industry and the services that support employ a great many people in the area.

The town provides residents with an assortment of amenities, including public transit, a busy municipal airport, public and separate board elementary schools, postsecondary education, comprehensive parks and recreation facilities and convenient access to healthcare.

The area enjoys a continental climate: low year-round precipitation results in low humidity levels that make the summer heat and winter cold seem less extreme. Despite the temperate climate, residents experience four full seasons, including a winter cold enough to form ice over the Peace River and beautiful warm and sunny summers.
