Geophysical Services

Focus offers a large array of geophysical services to meet clients’ exploration and environmental needs. Geophysical site sensing methods provide detailed mapping images of subsurface conditions and are highly recommended when a project calls for non-destructive, non-intrusive, rapid and cost-effective investigations. Some of the typical surface and shallow sub-surface applications for geophysical methods include:

  • Delineation and detection of soil and water contamination;
  • Groundwater exploration;
  • Oil sand exploration;
  • Detection of buried utilities and pipelines;
  • Investigation of archaeological sites;
  • Exploration of buried gravel deposits;
  • Assessment of salt water intrusion;
  • Characterization of landfills;
  • Assessment of salt water intrusion;
  • Detection of underground cavities and caverns;
  • Mapping of potential fresh water aquifers in coastal areas;
  • Mineral and mining exploration;
  • Monitoring pipelines and underground storage tanks for leakage; and
  • Mapping buried ordinance.

Geophysical methods can be implemented at various stages of environmental investigation and assessment. Depending on the nature of the area to be investigated, one or more environment sensing technologies, including magnetic, electromagnetic, resistivity, ground penetrating radar, seismic, gravity, and downhole well logging, may be employed.

To prepare your report, our team conducts a preliminary due diligence study, which includes a detailed records and information review. The information included in such an investigation may include:

  • Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) spill records;
  • Company internal spill records;
  • Well site inspection reports;
  • Communication files and other reports;
  • Evidence reclamation or remediation work and reclamation applications;
  • Copies of reclamation certificates;
  • Personal communication with office staff, land owners and operators;
  • Evidence of chemical spills;
  • Documentation of licenses and license transfer documents;
  • Public complaints of noise;
  • Public complaints of off site contamination to surrounding water, soil or air;
  • ERCB investigations;
  • Documentation of sites considered a potential environmental concern;
  • Site inspection summaries;
  • The estimates costs of outstanding environmental liabilities; and
